Turnip Greens, Water, Less Than 2 Of: Sugar, Salt, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Dried Onion, Spice, Natural Flavor, Dried Red Bell Pepper, Bacon Fat, Sodium Diacetate For Vinegar Flavor, Natural Smoke Flavor, Garlic Powder, Carmel Color, Pork Broth, Country Ham Broth, Brown Sugar, Pork, Yeast Extract.

1. Rinse the turnip greens, then add them to a large stockpot full of water, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tbsp vinegar. Soak the greens for 10 – 15 minutes to get rid of any dirt and grit. Then rinse them again with fresh water.

3. On medium-high, heat a large pot with butter, then add in the chopped turkey bacon. Cook the bacon until it starts to turn brown and crispy, and fond or the brown bits from the meat on the bottom of the pot, starts to develop. It will add additonal flavor to the greens.

Southern turnip greens have always been on the dinner table throughout my life. I dont recall the first time that I ate greens. I do recall the first time that I had greens that tasted of magic. My Dad invited an elderly friend, Sister Miles to our house to cook her special greens. He really wanted the recipe. Sister Miles really wanted to keep it.

As a single Mom, saving time and money is important always.

My turnip greens have evolved over the years adding in different spices, jalapeo peppers  or proteins. When I married Grill Man he raved about his Mommas greens. I thought that I cooked good greens until I had her flavor combination. The first time that I had Wathons turnip greens, I was amazed that they did not have anything added other than salt and pepper. No jalapeo peppers or meat added or needed. It was Jes greens.

Mustard and Turnip Greens! Oh my, yes! And to be totally honest, I never made mustard and turnip greens before I got married to my country asbuttermilk hubby. Hubby told me all about his favorite meal after we married. I had an inkling that it would be country. ol! To take it the meal over the top, he requested Oxtail Stew, northern beans,hot water cornbread and these greens! Oho! If that isnt country, I dont know what is!

And did I mention that I had never made any of these dishes before I married Willie?!?!? Yikes! Newly married and hadnt the slightest clue where to start. Meanwhile, I called momma and she sent me in the right direction and over the years, I have perfected his favorite meal as he requests it often.
