White Christmas sangria

One of my neighbors made some sangria recently and I realized a gaping hole in my blog where was the sangria?!?! To work out how to make the best low carb sangria, I looked up the exact definition:

Although I use red wine in cooking, I don't often drink it, especially not in the summer. So I decided to make a Sangria Blanca which is made with dry white wine instead of red. After that, I had to decide what else to add. Typical recipes include fruits such as peaches, nectarines, berries, apples, pears, pineapple or lime, and sweetened with sugar and orange juice. Well, berries and lime I could do for the rest I'd just have to improvise!

You'll need one bottle of a dry white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, a crisp Chardonnay from Chablis in Burgundy, Viognier from France, or Torronts from Argentina. There aren't any wrong choices, although it's best to avoid super sweet wines or wines that have been heavily oaked. You can even choose a sparkling wine and turn your sangria into a Champagne punch. If you do use a sparkling wine, make sure you don't add the bubbles until you're ready to serve since you want to preserve the fizzy character that makes such wines so fun and special.

Who doesn't love a glass of sangria?! It's sweet and refreshing, easy to sip on and feels like a celebration in a glass. Thanksgiving dinner brings with it rich foods like mashed potatoes and roasted turkey that need a drink like White Wine Sangria to compliment them.

If we are talking about White Wine Sangria, the best wine to use is a crisp and fruity Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio. If you are making this recipe into a Red Wine Sangria, a Grenache or Pinot Noir both work really well.

This week I was asked to bring a drink to a holiday ladies luncheon, and this white sangria recipe was such a hit. It was inspired by the white sangria at one of our favorite local Spanish restaurants, Cava.

Homemade sangria is so easy, beautiful and festive. I learned to make a red version, which Ill have to share soon, in a Spanish cooking class a few years ago. This citrus white sangria recipe is a bit like the Spanish version of our classic Italian Aperol Spritz. Other must-try citrusy cocktails include my favorite Greyhound,Limoncello Spritzer, and Skinny Blood Orange Margarita recipes.

For this winter sangria recipe I used the fruit that was growing in my backyard: oranges, blood oranges, limes, and grapefruit. Apples would also be great here in the fall and winter. In the summer, swap out the citrus for sliced peaches and berries.

I find that sangria is sweet enough with the addition of the orange liqueur and fruit, but if you have a sweet tooth, you might sweeten the sangria with a simple syrup a simple mixture of sugar and water.  

Be sure to wash your fruit before preparing it for the sangria. When cutting the fruit into pieces, remember that people will be eating the fruit so make it a size that is easy to eat out of a glass. Or, you could do what I do and offer a spoon along with the glass so that your guests can spoon the fruit out when they have finished drinking.

What liquor is best in white sangria?

Stone fruit season is coming to an end, which always makes me want to stop time. Since I cant do that, I just buy way too much of it. And then I eat 2-3 over the sink every day. I also like to eat Stone Fruit Burrata Caprese as much as humanly possible.

Lots of grape growers and wine makers do it right, the way nature intended. But unless youre speaking to them and learning about their process and practice, its tough to know which ones they are. How do we find them?
